Since I won’t be able to get down to the airport for a few weeks, I took the the time to head down there today. Most of the usual suspects, but the Delta 757 was a nice treat, as was the US Army UC-35 (Cessna Citation V). And a surprise Southwest 737 rounded out the trip.

Check out the reflection on the nose of this SW 737.

What’s the idea behind the squished engine nacelles on the 737? I mean, I get the fact that it sits really low on the ground, but then the question becomes why make them bulge out the sides?

The only thing I can think of is that they want the fans to be able to move the same volume of air as if the casing was round, but since it needs clearance underneath they bulge the bypass ducts out the sides. Shot in the dark, but I have no idea what else it could be for. You can probably tell me though.

I have one those a plastic model of southwest 737 in that livery, I got it back in 2001 or something like that. I love that livery. Mine is no where near that nice as 11 year old me didn’t have funds.

I think the one I saw today is more gold than the old livery. Or maybe it was just a fresh coat of paint. I’m not crazy about the new livery, though it does photograph nicely. I prefer the old AA livery for the same reason. The new one is flat and boring in pictures.

Actually, I can’t. But the Air & Space Museum can:

Looks like it says classic on the side probably paying homage to the old livery.

Indeed. I’m a sucker for retro liveries. I was really thrilled to see this.

I love TWA’s old livery, I’m just old enough to remember flying with them, I used to fly to NY a lot with my mom when I was younger. Glad to see American painted one plane with it.

That awesome Southwest classic livery gave me flashbacks. Being an Albuquerque native, Southwest is by far the primary carrier serving ABQ. That took me back to flying as a kid in the 90's.

It was a beauty, to be sure. I’m not a huge fan of the new livery, though it does photograph nicely. Probably 60% of the planes coming to AUS are SW. Still, it’s not as bad as spotting at DFW, where 80-90% of the planes are AA.

Agreed on the new livery. I don’t like that blue/purple color, but I think the Southwest text being broken up by the windows is a sin.

It’s all about visibility, I guess.

Thanks. Get ya some kit and start shooting! When I go back and look at pictures I edited two or more years ago, I see how much better I’ve gotten at this. We learn every time we click the shutter.

So very true. I’ve gone back a few times and looked at my old stuff. I find myself wanting to take breaks less and less.

Like the Pilatus. We have a local airline (SurfAir) that uses them...
